  27. WHAT The LANdon Bridge IS
  28. =========================
  29.  
  30. The LANdon Bridge is a software bridge/repeater/router for Artisoft(TM)
  31. LANtastic(R) networks.  It allows users to mix and match supported hardware
  32. types on their LANtastic(R) network, and allows all network nodes to log
  33. into all servers and send messges to all nodes, regardless of what kind of
  34. hardware they are using.
  35.  
  36. Users of the LANtsatic(R) 2Mbps adapters or the LANtastic(R)/Z network can
  37. connect to each other or to a 10Mbps network segment, such as Thinnet or
  38. twisted pair, and not be subject to the usual hardware restrictions of
  39. such an arrangement.  See MANUAL.TXT for more details.

  47. TIME-RESTRICTED VERSION
  48. =======================
  49.  
  50. This version of The LANdon Bridge is intended as a shareware demonstration
  51. program.  It is a fully functional copy of the registered version of The
  52. LANdon Bridge, with one exception.
  53.  
  54. After approximately 1/2 hour of operation, it will execute the SHUTDOWN command
  55. internally.  The SHUTDOWN command is documented in the manual.  After the
  56. initial 1/2 hour of operation, the RESTART command will not succeed.
  57. The FLUSH and REMOVE commands will still work, however, so you can cleanly
  58. remove the demonstration program from memory, even after the 1/2 hour
  59. demonstration period has expired.

  61. Note that there will be no warning before the SHUTDOWN command is executed
  62. internally.  Workstations may have to be rebooted, and data may be lost if
  63. they are actively accessing servers via the bridge when a SHUTDOWN occurs,
  64. depending on the particular application program's response to the loss of
  65. connection with the server.

  69. FIRST SHAREWARE VERSION
  70. =======================

  72. ***NOTE***  THIS IS AN EXTREMELY EARLY BETA VERSION OF THIS PROGRAM  ***NOTE***

  74. Having invested much time, money, and energy into this program, and finding
  75. our testing facilities to be less than what we would like, we at Limerick
  76. Software have decided to release the first Shareware version of The LANdon
  77. Bridge as a beta.  Users should monitor their source for this Shareware copy
  78. or, better yet, register their copy, to stay on top of future bug fixes and
  79. further enhancements.  See "Special Offer for New Users" and "Coming Soon"
  80. below.

  82. At the current time, known problems include the following:
  83.  
  84.     *    It is IMPERATIVE that the REDIR SIZE switch settings be
  85.         equal throughout the network, and that the same setting
  86.         be used for the BRIDGE BUFFER_SIZE switch.
  87.  
  88.     *    The automatic SHUTDOWN sometimes results in a system
  89.         lockup on the bridge machine.  Try to get out and
  90.         REMOVE The LANdon Bridge within the 30 minute time
  91.         allotted for demonstrating the program.
  92.  
  93.     *    Sometimes, passing server ids seems to be causing
  94.         miscellaneous undefined problems.  If you experience
  95.         unexplained lockups, try using USE_SERVER_IDS=NO,
  96.         together with later invocations of BRIDGE.EXE with
  97.         the ADD_SERVER_NAME switch.  Use ADD_SERVER_NAME to
  98.         explicitly list servers you want bridged.

  107. Please be as detailed and as patient as possible.  Users of the demonstration
  108. program, who are not registered users ARE WELCOME to submit bug reports.  We
  109. will try to respond to all bug reports, but cannot guarantee a response will
  110. be made in every instance.

  114. WHAT REGISTERED USERS GET

  117. Registered users will receive the most current version of The LANdon Bridge,
  118. along with a nicely typeset soft-cover manual, and one license, allowing
  119. the use of The LANdon Bridge on any single computer at any one time.

  123. SPECIAL OFFER FOR NEW USERS

  126. Due to the extreme earliness of this first release, users who register on or
  127. before May 31, 1993, will also receive, at no additional cost, automatic
  128. free upgrades for a period of six months, beginning June 1, 1993, and ending
  129. November 30, 1993.  Your support of this program will enable us to serve you
  130. better.

  134. HOW TO REGISTER

  137. You can become a registered user of The LANdon Bridge one of two ways.

  139. You can send a check or money order for $50.00, along with your name and
  140. address for delivery, and a request for The LANdon Bridge to:

  152. Shareware Registration Database.  Just GO SWREG, then follow the prompts

  155. Register Shareware" option.

  162. COMING SOON
  163. ===========

  165. By the next release of The LANdon Bridge, we anticipate having added the
  166. following features:
  167.  
  168.     *    A command line switch such as SHOW or INFO, which
  169.         will list servers in the internal server name table,
  170.         logins to various servers via the bridge, the number
  171.         of available server names, and logins, etc.
  172.  
  173.     *    A command line switch such as RPL=YES/NO, or RPL_SERVER=xxxxx,
  174.         to allow RPL logins across the bridge.  At the current time,
  175.         servers configured as RPL boot image servers cannot
  176.         be accessed by the boot ROM via The LANdon Bridge.
  177.  
  178.     *    A command line switch such as REMOVE_SERVER_NAME, to
  179.         allow the deletion of individual server names from the
  180.         internal server name list, rather than forcing users
  181.         to FLUSH the bridge, as is currently the case.
  182.  
  183.     *    Possible command line switches to restrict logins to
  184.         an explicit list of machine names, machines other
  185.         than those cannot login via the bridge.  This would
  186.         add a layer to the already considerable security built
  187.         into LANtastic(R).
  188.  
  189.     *    Possible support for NET CHAT, The Network Eye, and
  190.         other NetBIOS session-based application software.

  194. ERRATA
  195. ======

  197. The page numbers given in the Table of Contents in MANUAL.TXT are inaccurate.
  198. The Table of Contents has been left in as a general guide to the manual.
  199.  
  200. The hook preventing Microsoft(TM) Windows(TM), Version 3.1, from starting
  201. in Enhanced mode has been removed.  To the best of our knowledge, Windows(TM)
  202. MAY be run in Enhanced mode on a machine running The LANdon Bridge.
